A Love Letter to Dance Moms in the Audience
From the outside, dance competitions might look like a bunch of studios competing against each other.
And yes, technically there are scores, placements, and awards.
But if you spend any real time sitting in the audience, you’ll see something completely different happening.
Because behind every dancer on stage is a whole group of dance moms quietly holding the entire experience together.
This is a little love letter to the women sitting in those chairs.
The Cheerleaders For Every Kid
Dance moms don’t just cheer for their own dancers. We cheer for everyone. The tiny dancers who bravely walk on stage for the first time. The seniors finishing their final competition season. The soloists who just had the performance of their life. And sometimes the dancer who clearly forgot a section but pushed through anyway. We clap, we cheer, and we mean it.
The Costume Fixers
At some point during a competition weekend, a hook breaks, a strap snaps, or a rhinestone decides it no longer wants to live on the costume. And almost instantly, some dance mom somewhere pulls out a sewing kit, safety pins, or lash glue like a backstage superhero. It doesn’t matter whose dancer it is. If a kid needs help, someone jumps in.
The Snack Sharers
Dance bags are full of snacks for a reason. But somehow someone always forgets something. Suddenly fruit snacks, protein bars, pickles, or crackers are being passed around like a community buffet. Because hungry dancers and long competition days do not mix well.
The Phone Holders
There is an unspoken system in the audience. Someone runs backstage. Someone saves a seat. Someone holds a phone. Someone watches a bag. Without saying a word, dance moms help each other make sure nobody misses their dancer on stage.
The Quiet Supporters
Sometimes the most important moments happen off stage. A dancer didn’t place. A routine didn’t go the way they hoped. The emotions can be big. And that’s when the dance moms step in with hugs, kind words, and reminders that they did something brave just by stepping on stage.
The Truth About Competition Weekends
Yes, competitions are technically competitive.
But they are also full of encouragement, teamwork, and support that people outside the dance world rarely see.
And the women sitting in those audience chairs are a huge part of that.
So here’s to the dance moms in the audience.
The cheerleaders, the costume fixers, the snack sharers, and the quiet supporters.
You may not be on the stage, but you are absolutely part of the magic that happens there.
And now I want to hear from you.
Dance moms, what is something another dance mom has done for you at a competition that you’ll never forget?
Until next time, TCDM Fam. 💙
