Top 10 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before My First Dance Competition Weekend

A survival guide from That Crazy Dance Mom

The first time you walk into a dance competition, it feels a little like stepping into another world.

There are garment racks in hotel hallways.
Makeup bags everywhere.
Someone is curling hair at 6 AM.
And suddenly you realize this is not just a recital… this is a full blown weekend event.

If you’re a brand new dance mom getting ready for your first competition weekend, welcome. We’re happy you’re here. And also… buckle up.

Here are 10 things I wish someone told me before my first dance competition weekend.

1. It’s okay to cheer for your dancer… and their friends

Dance competitions can feel intimidating at first, but the best studios create an environment where everyone supports each other.

When your dancer hits the stage, cheer them on. When their teammates dance, cheer for them too. When their friends from other studios perform something amazing, cheer for them as well.

The dance world is competitive, yes. But it’s also full of incredible kids doing really hard things on stage. Celebrate that.

2. DO NOT take photos or videos when they are on stage dancing, unless you have permission

This one surprises a lot of new parents.

Most competitions do not allow photos or videos during performances because of copyright laws related to the music and choreography.

It’s not about being mean or secretive. It’s about protecting artists and following licensing rules.

If you’re unsure, always check the competition’s rules first.

3. The schedule will change. Probably multiple times

You will check the schedule.
Then you will check it again.
Then someone will say it updated.

Competitions run hundreds of routines in a weekend, so timing shifts happen. Sometimes you’ll run early. Sometimes you’ll run late.

Best advice: stay flexible and keep an eye on updates.

4. Dance moms are actually pretty nice

Before my first competition I expected something closer to a reality TV show.

You know the one.

But the truth is, most dance moms are incredibly supportive. We help zip costumes, find missing bobby pins, and hand out snacks like we’re running a small convenience store.

We’re all just trying to get our kids through the day.

5. Pack more snacks than you think you need

Competition days are long.

Sometimes really long.

Your dancer will burn a ton of energy, and concession lines can be unpredictable. Bring snacks, water, and something with protein so your dancer can stay fueled between routines.

Pro tip: dance bags have an amazing ability to swallow snacks and hide them forever.

6. Awards take longer than you think

You will think awards are about to start.

They are not about to start.

You will hear “Awards will begin shortly” and settle in for a bit. Competitions are recognizing dozens (sometimes hundreds) of routines, so it takes time.

Patience is part of the experience.

7. The first time your dancer goes on stage… your heart will explode

You might think you’re calm.

Then the music starts and suddenly your entire body is holding its breath.

Watching your kid step onto a big stage is emotional. It’s exciting. It’s nerve wracking.

And honestly… it’s one of the coolest things you’ll ever see.

8. Someone will always have extra bobby pins

Dance moms travel in packs. And someone always has the emergency stash.

Bobby pins, safety pins, hairspray, eyelash glue, snacks, Tylenol, bandaids… it’s basically a mobile pharmacy and beauty salon.

If you forget something, just ask.

9. You will become emotionally invested in routines that aren’t even your dancer’s

By the end of the weekend you’ll find yourself cheering for kids you’ve never met before.

You’ll recognize routines. You’ll know the songs. You’ll whisper “this one is really good” to the mom next to you.

Welcome to the dance competition experience.

10. You’re about to make some of the best memories with your dancer

Yes, the days are long.

Yes, there will be stress, schedule changes, and maybe a little chaos.

But there will also be laughter in hotel rooms, proud moments backstage, and memories your dancer will carry for the rest of their life.

So take pictures outside the ballroom. Cheer loudly. Hug your dancer after they perform.

And welcome to the wild, wonderful world of dance competitions.

We’re glad you’re here.

Until next time, TCDM Fam. 💙
