The Night Before Competition: What Dance Moms Are Actually Doing
If you’re new to the competition dance world, you might imagine the night before a competition looking calm and organized. Maybe your dancer lays out their costume neatly. Maybe everyone goes to bed early. Maybe the house is peaceful.
Let me lovingly tell you the truth.
The night before competition is absolute chaos.
Not bad chaos. Just dance mom chaos.
Because while the dancers are dreaming about the stage, the moms are running the entire behind the scenes operation that makes the next day possible.
The Costume Explosion
Your living room will somehow become a costume department. Tights, fishnets, backup tights, backup backup tights, lashes, lipstick, hair spray, safety pins, earrings, and rhinestones will appear everywhere. You will swear you packed everything already. You will check again anyway.
The Dance Bag Audit
You will unpack and repack the dance bag at least twice. Snacks, water bottles, makeup bag, sewing kit, extra hair ties, deodorant, band aids, a charger, and whatever random item your dancer suddenly remembers they “absolutely need.” This bag will weigh approximately the same as a small toddler by morning.
Charging Every Device Known to Mankind
Phones. Portable chargers. Cameras. Bluetooth speakers. Anything that might be needed tomorrow gets plugged in tonight because there is nothing worse than realizing your phone died right before your dancer goes on stage.
Snack Preparation Like You’re Provisioning a Small Army
Long competition days require fuel. Dance moms suddenly become snack strategists. Protein snacks. Fruit snacks. Pickles. Energy bites. Electrolyte drinks. Something salty. Something sweet. Something that will somehow still disappear by noon.
The Alarm Strategy
One alarm is not enough. You will set three. Possibly four. One for you. One backup alarm. One “you absolutely have to get up now” alarm. And one emergency alarm just in case.
The Sleep Negotiation
You will lovingly remind your dancer that they need sleep for tomorrow. Your dancer will insist they are not tired. They will suddenly want to talk about dance for another hour. Eventually everyone goes to bed knowing that 5 AM is coming very quickly.
The Quiet Moment Before the Whirlwind
At some point the house finally gets quiet. The costumes are packed. The bag is ready. The alarms are set.
And you realize tomorrow your dancer gets to do what they love most.
That early morning and long day ahead suddenly feels completely worth it.
Welcome to competition season, dance moms.
We’ve got this.
Until next time, TCDM Fam. 💙
