Where to Stay in Anaheim Without Blowing Your Entire Dance Budget

A Dance Mom’s Guide to Hotels, Points, and Smart Location Choices

Let’s be honest for a second…

When your dancer qualifies for Nationals or a big out of state competition, your first thought is excitement.
Your second thought?

“Okay but… how much is this trip about to cost me?”

Between entry fees, costumes, travel, food, and everything in between… where you stay matters more than you think.

📍 FIRST THINGS FIRST

Why This Mostly Focuses on Disneyland Area

Most dance nationals in Anaheim are held right near Disneyland.

We’re talking:
✔ Anaheim Convention Center
✔ Hilton Conference Center
✔ Marriott Conference Center
✔ Sometimes even Disney property itself

So naturally… staying near Disneyland is going to be the most common and practical choice for dance families.

BUT…

There are definitely exceptions.

And we’ll get to that in a bit 😉

🏨 CLOSE TO DISNEY WITHOUT DISNEY PRICES

(Budget Friendly + Walkable)

If your competition is near the Convention Center…

This is your sweet spot.

Hotels across from Disneyland are:
✔ Walkable
✔ Safe
✔ Full of dance families
✔ Way more affordable than staying on Disney property

Great options to look into:

💡 Dance Mom Tip
Walking distance is EVERYTHING.

… just maybe not in the exact way you think.

After a long competition day? I’m tired. I want to sit in the car and not move for a second 😂

BUT…

Being within walking distance to:
✔ Food
✔ Coffee
✔ Quick Target or CVS runs
✔ Disneyland fun if that’s part of your trip

That is where it really pays off.

🏡 SUITES AND SPACE FOR REAL LIFE

(Mid Range and Practical)

If you have:
✔ Multiple dancers
✔ Siblings
✔ A lot of costumes

You need space.
Period.

Look into:

Perks:
✔ Free breakfast
✔ Kitchenettes
✔ Space to actually function as a human

💬 Real Talk
Trying to organize costumes in a tiny hotel room is a level of chaos I do not recommend.

🏠 AIRBNB + VRBO

(A Great Option… With a Few Things to Think About)

This is one of those options that comes up a lot when families are planning Anaheim trips.

And honestly? It can be a really great fit depending on your situation.

✔️ Why Families Love It

✔ More space for larger groups
✔ Full kitchens (huge for saving money on food)
✔ Separate bedrooms
✔ A more relaxed “home base” feel

⚠️ Why I Personally Haven’t Used It for Disney Trips

For me, it comes down to flexibility.
With dance competitions, especially Nationals, you often don’t have your full schedule until pretty close to the event.

Which means:
✔ Arrival times can shift
✔ Departure days can change
✔ Plans can adjust last minute

With hotels?
✔ Easier to modify reservations
✔ Easier to cancel within a window
✔ More flexibility overall

With AirBNB or VRBO?
That flexibility can be more limited depending on the host.

💬 Real Dance Mom Thought Process

I would rather:
✔ Pay a little more
✔ Have flexibility
✔ Avoid stress

Because competition week already brings enough chaos.

💡 If You DO Go This Route

✔ Look for flexible cancellation policies
✔ Stay close to your venue
✔ Check parking
✔ Make sure food options are nearby, or you have a full kitchen to cook

✨ When This Makes Sense

Larger groups or multiple families
Longer stays
✔ Confirmed schedule
Extra vacation days built in

🎯 REWARDS PROGRAMS = FREE NIGHTS

(My Favorite Kind of Nights)

I’m just going to say it…

Hilton, IHG, and Marriott absolutely know my name 😂

Reward programs are:
✔ Free to join
✔ Easy to use
✔ Perfect for frequent dance travel

Use them for:
✔ Free nights
✔ Discounts
✔ Upgrades

💡 Tip
Even just a couple trips a year adds up faster than you think.

⚠️ TIMESHARES… YES BUT ALSO… THINK IT THROUGH

(Big Savings With a Catch)

You can save a LOT with timeshares.

But…

You may need to:
✔ Sit through a presentation
✔ Give up part of your day

And during competition week?

That’s risky.

💬 Dance Mom Reality
Saving money is great… but not if it costs you time, energy, or peace of mind.

✨ DISNEY HOTELS… WHEN TO SPLURGE

(Strategic Magic)

We love Disney. Obviously.

But staying on property can get expensive quickly.

Ways to make it work:
✔ Stay fewer nights on property
✔ Combine with off site hotels
✔ Use points or deals

💡 Smart Combo
Stay off property during competition days
Move to Disney for your fun days

🚨 THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I SEE

Location vs Schedule

I have seen families try to do it all.

Disney mornings
Competition afternoons
Chaos in between

Please don’t do this.

👉 Always plan to arrive at least 2 hours early
👉 Fully ready
👉 Calm, not rushed

Your dancer deserves that energy.

⭐ BONUS SECTION

When You DON’T Need to Stay Near Disneyland

Not every competition is right by Disney.

And when that happens…

👉 Stay close to your venue instead.

Last summer, we were at a competition near the Hyatt Conference Center.

If we had stayed near Disneyland?

We would have been dealing with:
❌ Longer drives
❌ Parking costs
❌ Added stress

So we stayed at Homewood Suites right across the street.

And honestly… it was the best decision.

Here’s why:

✔ Walking distance to the venue
✔ Easy drop offs and pickups
✔ No daily parking fees
✔ Quick “run back to the room” moments under 10 minutes

And the perks?

✔ Pool for fun time
✔ Free breakfast (free is my favorite)
✔ Mid week happy hour where the kids basically ate dinner for free… huzzah!
✔ Full kitchen that saved us a TON on food

💬 Reflection Moment
Yes, Disneyland is fun.

But convenience during competition week?

That wins every time.

❤️ FINAL THOUGHTS

Where you stay impacts everything:
✔ Your stress level
✔ Your schedule
✔ Your overall experience

Choose convenience.
Choose comfort.
Choose what works best for your dancer.
